I have been feeling bit down lately, so I decided that I need to make something super cute to cheer me up. And I guess I managed. I had the urge to obtain flats with dog design for almost 4 years now (to be precise, these flats by Irregular choice). However, this summer when I finally managed to visit Irregular choice shop to try the shoes on (because I ain't gonna spend this obscene amount of money without trying them on first!), they told me that they don't sell the Scottie dog edition anymore. *Cries silently in the corner.* Sooo, as I needed to cheer myself up a bit, I made something even better - pug flats. Because pugs are super cute and who would not love pugs, right? ^^
Materials:
Felt in different colours
Needle and threads
Dreadnoughts
Glue (I used special glue for leather)
Chalk
Scissors
(and flats, obviously)
First of all, I want to mention that by no means I purchased these flats for this project. Those are high quality leather flats that I purchased for my prom (because I was in desperate need of flats that I can survive all the evening in), however I didn't like the decorations on them, so I ended up not wearing them even once after the prom. If you want to do something similar and don't have situation like this going on in your shoe collection, buy some cheap flats, because you probably will wear these flats only occasionally. For this reason, I am using dreadnoughts to keep my felt pugs in place instead of just gluing it in place - if I end up not liking my pugs anymore, I can easily remove it or change it for another design.
Preferably use special glue for leather and fabric, because it is more flexible when dry. |
First of all, you will want to cut felt in pieces that you need to form your design. If you are aiming for design that I used, I uploaded my (hand drawn) template here so that you can download it and print it and then cut the pieces of template itself. You can transfer them to the felt using chalk or some kind of marker would work alright as well. Once you have cut all your felt pieces, you would probably like to glue them together, however, I strongly recommend to embroider the details now as it is slightly easier than piercing the needle through more layers of felt and the glue. When all the wrinkles etc. are embroidered, just glue the whole thing together.
At this point, you just need to attach the felt design onto your flats. It is absolutely up to you whether you copy my way or whether you just glue the whole thing together. My flats were already ruined by glue in certain part, so I decided to use this part only to attach the felt onto the shoe. If you decide to use dreadnoughts, measure properly where to glue them and then wait till the glue is completely dry so that you don't ruin the whole thing.
I can't wait to wear these! :3 |
I didn't like the original design of the shoe - it looks way better now, huh? |
